Served as Assistant Manager at the Cairns Youth Hostel, a bustling tropical backpacker hub in Far North Queensland that catered to adventure travelers heading to the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics.

Supported the hostel manager in overseeing daily operations, supervising front desk staff, and managing the accommodation needs of hundreds of international guests. Coordinated with tour operators offering reef diving, snorkeling trips, and rainforest excursions, helping guests plan their tropical Queensland adventures. Handled scheduling, staff supervision, guest services, and operational problem-solving in this high-energy environment where travelers from around the world converged to explore one of Australia's premier tourist destinations.

Managed the unique challenges of running a hostel in the humid tropics during the peak years of backpacker tourism in Cairns, when the town was transforming into an international adventure travel hotspot.

Booking Manager, Kuranda Rainforest Resort

Early 1990s

Managed reservations and bookings at the Kuranda Rainforest Resort, an eco-tourism property nestled in the rainforest village of Kuranda in the mountains above Cairns.

Coordinated all guest bookings and reservations, managing occupancy for this unique rainforest accommodation. Communicated with travel agents, tour operators, and direct guests to secure bookings and provide information about the resort's rainforest setting and proximity to Kuranda's attractions, including the Scenic Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

Maintained reservation systems, processed payments, and ensured smooth coordination between bookings and on-site operations. This role provided experience in the growing eco-tourism sector during a period when the Kuranda region was gaining international recognition as a must-visit rainforest destination in tropical North Queensland.
